The vagus nerve is involved in heart rate, digestion, swallowing, breathing, and communication along the gut-brain axis. Because it reaches so many areas, changes in vagal function can produce a wide range of symptoms.
Signs That May Be Related to Vagus Nerve Dysfunction
Symptoms depend on the cause and the portion of the nerve involved. They can also overlap with many other health conditions, so symptoms alone cannot determine whether the vagus nerve is responsible.
Potential concerns may include:

Some vagus nerve disorders are well recognized in conventional medicine. Gastroparesis, for example, may occur when vagus nerve damage interferes with signals that help move food through the stomach. Vasovagal syncope occurs when an exaggerated autonomic response causes heart rate and blood pressure to drop, sometimes resulting in fainting.
Other health concerns, including dysautonomia and POTS, involve broader autonomic nervous system regulation. Because the vagus nerve is an important part of that system, evaluating autonomic function can provide useful information, but these conditions require appropriate medical diagnosis and management.
